Asthma Increases Blood Clot Risk

12/28/2012

On 12/20/2012 an article came out with new information about risk factors for blood clots.  The newest risk that researchers have pinpointed is asthma.  According to the article, "people with severe asthma were almost nine times more likely to develop a PE compared to people without asthma."  This means that people who are already struggling with lung problems are at risk for even more lung problems.  This article doesn't mention any thoughts as to why the risk goes up when someone has severe asthma.  One can hope that if the asthma is managed that the risk will drop.  Only time and more research will let us know the answers to that question.  This is only preliminary research.  More studies need to be done to see if this effect is repeated.  To read more about the study see: http://www.irishhealth.com/article.html?id=21484#.UNMBDo-zOWw.facebook

My dad had a massive pe nearly 2 weeks ago and is still in hospital. He feels ok with no symptoms when he walks a short distance to the bathroom but he is still on oxygen and his saturation level is mid 90s but when they try to take him off the oxygen it goes down to mid 80s so they put him back on the oxygen. Has anyone any experience of being on oxygen still 2 weeks later!? Not sure if he has any permanent damage but he needed thrombolysis and it was life threatening clot. The doctors seem to think the oxygen level will go up once te clots have fully dissolved but not o2 level not improving when off oxygen!??

worried and confused. It wouldn't let me submit a question so thought I'd try and add a comment instead. Does anyone have any information about whether O2 levels will improve or if permanently will be low as it has been 2 weeks now and still in low to mid 80s :(
Thanks!!

Hi Amy,
Odd that it won't cooperate with submitting a question. I will have to take a look at that and find out why it is misbehaving.

I am guessing that blood clots are still clogging up your dad's lungs. If the clots block the blood then the blood can't reach the oxygen. I have heard of people on some of the support groups going home on oxygen so my guess is that it does happen sometimes.

I would ask your questions at one of these support groups and see what you learn:

http://www.dailystrength.org/c/Pulmonary-Embolism/support-group

or

https://www.facebook.com/groups/pulmonarysurvivors/

They are both very active and were a great help to me in 2008 when I had my clots.

Have you asked to doctor what causes low O2 levels? It sounds like you covered the "how long do you expect levels to be low" question.

I am off to check on the form problems that you had. Have a great evening. I hope one of those two sites is useful in your quest for answers.

If you think of more questions let me know. You can try the contact form to email me directly: http://www.clotspot.com/contact-us.html (unless it is misbehaving as well)

Best wishes,
Lena
